Free Aspect Ratio Calculator — Keep Proportions Perfect

Resizing an image or video without squashing it? Our free Aspect Ratio Calculator keeps your proportions perfect. Enter an aspect ratio—like 16:9—plus one dimension, and it instantly works out the matching width or height, so your content scales cleanly with no stretching or distortion. Change either value and the other follows the locked ratio automatically.

It works the other way too: type in any width and height, such as 1920×1080, and it simplifies them to the cleanest ratio for you. Quick presets cover the formats you use most—16:9, 4:3, 21:9, square 1:1, and vertical 9:16—and a live preview box shows the proportion at a glance. Whether you're designing graphics, cropping photos, setting up video, or laying out a screen, you'll get exact, in-proportion dimensions every time.

Simply enter a ratio and a dimension to see the rest instantly. No sign-up, no downloads, no limits—just accurate results whenever you need them.

About the Aspect Ratio Calculator

What it does

The Aspect Ratio Calculator solves two common proportion problems in one place. Give it an aspect ratio plus one dimension and it instantly computes the other — so you never stretch or squash an image when resizing. Switch to Simplify mode and enter any width and height to get back the simplest ratio (like 16:9 from 1920×1080).

A live preview box updates in real time to show the exact proportion you're working with. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Features

Solve missing dimension

Enter a ratio and one known side (width or height) — the other is computed instantly and shown in the field. Change either value and the calculation updates bidirectionally.

Simplify any resolution

Type in a width and height — the tool divides both by their GCD to find the simplest integer ratio, plus the decimal equivalent for reference.

Common ratio presets

One-click buttons for 16:9, 4:3, 21:9, 1:1, 3:2, and 9:16 — the formats used in HD video, photography, ultrawide displays, social media squares, and vertical mobile content.

Live proportion preview

A scaled rectangle updates in real time to show the shape of the current ratio, so you can judge proportions visually without doing any mental math.

Non-integer warning

When the computed dimension is a fractional pixel (e.g. 562.5 from 16:9 at 1000 wide), the tool flags it immediately so you can round consciously rather than end up with a blurry edge.

Custom ratio input

Type any W:H ratio beyond the presets — including unusual ratios like 2.35:1 for anamorphic cinema or 5:4 for older monitors.

How the math works

All calculations use basic proportional arithmetic:

Solving from width

height = width × ratioH / ratioW
Example: 1920 × 9 / 16 = 1080

Solving from height

width = height × ratioW / ratioH
Example: 1080 × 16 / 9 = 1920

Simplifying a ratio

Both dimensions are divided by their greatest common divisor (GCD via Euclidean algorithm). 1920 and 1080 share GCD 120 → 16:9.

Decimal ratio

Width ÷ Height gives the decimal equivalent (1920 ÷ 1080 ≈ 1.7778). Useful when comparing ratios or matching values across tools that expect a single number.

Who it's for

Video editors

Match export dimensions to a target resolution without changing the ratio of the original footage.

Graphic designers

Scale artboards, banners, and print assets proportionally to any size — and check that a client-supplied resolution matches a standard ratio.

Web developers

Set correct width/height attributes on images, embed correct iframe dimensions, and design responsive containers that maintain layout proportions.

Photographers

Crop images to a target ratio for print sizes (4×6, 5×7, 8×10) and confirm the crop won't distort the original composition.

Social media managers

Find exact pixel dimensions for platform-required ratios — 1:1 for Instagram, 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for Reels and Stories.

Game developers

Scale sprite sheets and UI elements to any target resolution while preserving the original art's proportions across different screen sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the aspect ratio calculator work?

Enter an aspect ratio (like 16:9) and one dimension — width or height — and the tool instantly computes the other so the proportion stays exactly locked. Change either value and the other updates automatically. You can also enter a width and height to simplify them to their reduced ratio.

Is the aspect ratio calculator free?

Completely free. No sign-up, no downloads, no limits — use it as many times as you like.

What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a rectangle's width and height, written as W:H (for example 16:9). It describes shape, not size — a 1920×1080 image and a 320×180 thumbnail share the same 16:9 ratio.

How do I find a missing dimension from a ratio?

Select or type the aspect ratio (e.g. 16:9), then enter the dimension you know — width or height. The tool computes the other dimension instantly using the formula: height = width × ratioH / ratioW (or width = height × ratioW / ratioH).

Can it simplify a resolution to a ratio?

Yes. Switch to the Simplify Ratio tab, enter your width and height (like 1920 and 1080), and the tool reduces them to the simplest whole-number ratio (16:9) along with the decimal equivalent.

Which ratio presets are included?

The presets cover the most common formats: 16:9 (widescreen HD/4K), 4:3 (standard SD and presentations), 21:9 (ultrawide/cinematic), 1:1 (square, used by Instagram), 3:2 (DSLR sensors and 35mm film), and 9:16 (vertical/portrait for phones and Reels). You can also type any custom ratio.

What if the computed dimension is not a whole number?

The tool shows the exact decimal result and flags it with a warning when the computed dimension is not a whole pixel (for example, 16:9 + width 1000 gives height 562.5). You can then round up or down as suits your use case.

Why does keeping the aspect ratio matter?

Maintaining the aspect ratio prevents images, videos, and layouts from stretching or squashing. Changing only one dimension without scaling the other distorts the content, making subjects look too wide, too tall, or otherwise unnatural.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored, logged, or sent to any server.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, the tool is fully responsive. Inputs, presets, and the preview all fit on small screens without horizontal scrolling.
