๐ŸซVO2 Max Calculator

Estimate your VO2 max from four validated methods โ€” resting heart rate, Cooper 12-minute run, 1.5-mile run, or Rockport 1-mile walk. Enter your result to see your estimated aerobic capacity and where you stand by age and sex.

This calculator provides educational fitness estimates only โ€” not medical advice, a clinical assessment, or a substitute for a laboratory graded-exercise test. Field-test VO2 max estimates carry a typical error of ยฑ5โ€“10 ml/kg/min and results differ between methods, so compare the same method over time rather than across methods. The Cooper run, 1.5-mile run, and Rockport walk test require strenuous or maximal effort. Warm up properly before any field test. Do not attempt an all-out test if you have a heart or respiratory condition, feel unwell, or have been advised against vigorous exercise without medical clearance. Stop immediately if you experience chest pain, significant shortness of breath, dizziness, or other symptoms. Consult a qualified health professional before starting an intense training programme or if you have any health concerns.

Free VO2 Max Calculator Online

Curious about your aerobic fitness? Our free VO2 Max Calculator estimates your maximal oxygen uptake from a simple test. As a flexible vo2 max calculator, it supports several validated methodsโ€”from a no-exercise resting heart-rate estimate to the Cooper 12-minute run, the 1.5-mile run, and the Rockport one-mile walkโ€”so you can use whichever fits your situation.

Enter your test result along with your age and sex, and you'll get your estimated VO2 max in ml/kg/min, placed against reference ranges so you can see where you stand, plus your equivalent METs. Pick the method that suits you, switch between metric and imperial, and track the same test over time to follow your progress. It's a handy way to gauge cardiovascular fitness without a lab.

Simply choose a method and enter your result to see your estimate instantly. No sign-up, no downloads, no limitsโ€”just a clear fitness estimate whenever you need it. Read more in the FAQ or About pages.

About the VO2 Max Calculator

Key features

Four estimation methods

Choose from the Uth resting heart-rate method, the Cooper 12-minute run, the 1.5-mile run, or the Rockport 1-mile walk test โ€” use whichever suits your situation and fitness level.

Age & sex reference ranges

Results are placed against ACSM normative data for your age group and sex, with six categories from Very Poor to Superior so you can see where your estimate sits.

METs and absolute VO2

Alongside your VO2 max, the calculator shows your equivalent METs. Enter an optional body weight to also see your absolute VO2 in litres per minute.

Metric & imperial units

Switch freely between metric and imperial for distance and body weight inputs. Unit conversions are handled automatically so you can enter values in whichever system you prefer.

How the formulas work

Uth / Tanaka (resting HR)

VO2max = 15.3 ร— (HRmax รท HRrest), where HRmax = 208 โˆ’ 0.7 ร— age (Tanaka formula). Requires only resting heart rate and age โ€” no physical test needed, but the least precise of the four methods.

Cooper 12-minute run

VO2max = (distance in metres โˆ’ 504.9) รท 44.73. Run as far as possible in 12 minutes on a flat surface. Metric input in km is converted to metres; imperial input in miles uses 1 mile = 1609.344 m.

1.5-Mile run

VO2max = 3.5 + 483 รท time in minutes. Run 1.5 miles as fast as possible and record your time. Enter minutes and seconds; the formula uses total decimal minutes.

Rockport 1-mile walk (Kline)

VO2max = 132.853 โˆ’ 0.0769 ร— weight(lb) โˆ’ 0.3877 ร— age + 6.315 ร— sex(1=M,0=F) โˆ’ 3.2649 ร— time(min) โˆ’ 0.1565 ร— end HR. Walk 1 mile as briskly as possible, record time and immediate post-walk heart rate.

A note on accuracy and safety

Field-test estimates are approximations, not clinical measurements. A typical error of ยฑ5โ€“10 ml/kg/min means your true VO2 max may be meaningfully higher or lower than the estimate. Different methods use different formulas and have different error profiles, so you should not compare scores across methods โ€” track the same test over time to monitor changes in your fitness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VO2 max?

The maximum rate your body can use oxygen during intense exercise, expressed in ml/kg/min. It's a common measure of aerobic (cardiovascular) fitness.

How does the calculator estimate it?

You pick a test method and enter your result; the calculator applies that method's validated formula to estimate your VO2 max, then uses your age and sex to show reference ranges.

Which method should I use?

The resting heart-rate method (Uth formula) needs no exercise but is the least precise. The Cooper 12-minute run, 1.5-mile run, and Rockport 1-mile walk tests require a measured effort and are generally more accurate.

Is it free to use?

Completely free, no sign-up, no downloads, no limits.

How accurate are the estimates?

They are approximations. Field tests carry a typical error of about ยฑ5โ€“10 ml/kg/min compared with a laboratory graded-exercise test, which is the gold standard. Use these estimates as a useful guide, not a precise measurement.

Can I compare results from different methods?

Not directly. Each method has its own formula and error characteristics, so differences between methods may reflect the method itself rather than a real change in fitness. Stick to the same method when tracking progress over time.

Is it safe to do these tests?

The running and walking field tests are strenuous. Warm up properly first, and do not attempt an all-out test if you have a heart or respiratory condition, feel unwell, or have been advised against vigorous exercise without medical clearance. Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or severe breathlessness.

What is a good VO2 max for my age?

It varies by age and sex. The calculator shows reference ranges for your age group and sex so you can see roughly where your estimate falls โ€” from Very Poor through to Superior.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations happen in your browser and are never stored or sent to a server.

Does this replace a medical or lab assessment?

No. It provides an educational fitness estimate, not medical advice or a clinical measurement. Consult a health professional for personalised guidance or before starting an intense training programme.
