How is maximum heart rate estimated?
By default it uses the common age-based formula (220 minus your age). This is a general estimate — if you know your actual measured max heart rate, you can enter it for more accurate zones.
What are the five heart rate zones?
They range from very light (Zone 1 — easy recovery effort, 50–60% of max HR) up to maximum (Zone 5 — very hard, short bursts, 90–100% of max HR), with light (Zone 2, fat-burning base), moderate (Zone 3, aerobic conditioning), and vigorous (Zone 4, anaerobic threshold) zones in between. Each zone corresponds to a percentage band of your maximum heart rate and serves a different training purpose.
What is the Karvonen method?
The Karvonen method uses your heart rate reserve — the gap between your resting and maximum heart rate — to calculate zones. The formula is: Zone BPM = (zone percentage × heart rate reserve) + resting heart rate. By entering your resting heart rate, you get zones tailored more closely to your individual cardiovascular fitness.
How do I find my resting heart rate?
Measure your pulse when you are fully at rest, ideally first thing in the morning before getting up and before any caffeine or physical activity. Count your heartbeats for 60 seconds, or count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. For accuracy, measure over several days and use the average. Entering your resting heart rate enables the more personalised Karvonen calculation.
How accurate are these zones?
They are useful general guides. The 220 − age formula for maximum heart rate is a population average, and individuals can differ significantly — sometimes by 10–20 bpm. A directly measured maximum heart rate (from a supervised maximal effort test) will give more accurate zones. The Karvonen method, when used with true resting and maximum heart rate values, produces more personalised zones than the age formula alone.
