Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the free Pomodoro Timer — how it works, custom durations, long breaks, audio cues, and more.
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method: work in focused intervals (classically 25 minutes) separated by short breaks, with a longer break after completing a set number of sessions. The name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer its creator used.
How does this Pomodoro timer work?
Press Start and the timer counts down a 25-minute focus session. When it ends, it plays an audio cue and moves to a 5-minute short break. After every four focus sessions it switches to a 15-minute long break. A session counter tracks your completed pomodoros — all hands-free.
Is the timer free?
Completely free. No sign-up, no downloads, no limits — use it for as many sessions as you like.
Can I change the durations?
Yes. Customize the focus length, short-break length, long-break length, and how many focus sessions come before the long break. All settings take effect when you press Start on the next session.
When does the long break happen?
After completing a set number of focus sessions — four by default. You can adjust this number in the settings to any value from 1 to 20.
Will the audio cues play if the tab is in the background or the screen is off?
Yes. Audio cues are generated via the Web Audio API, which runs reliably even when the tab is in the background. On supported browsers, a screen wake lock also keeps the display on so your timer is never interrupted.
Can it auto-start the next phase?
Yes. Turn on the auto-start toggle in settings and the timer moves straight from focus to break (and break back to focus) without any input from you — so you keep your rhythm without watching the screen.
Can I pause, skip, or reset?
Yes. Pause freezes the timer; Resume picks up exactly where it left off. Skip moves you to the next phase immediately. Reset returns everything to the initial idle state.
Is any data stored?
No. The timer runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is stored locally or sent to any server.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, the timer is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops with no horizontal overflow. The large countdown display is readable at a glance, and the Start and Skip buttons are sized for touch.
