VO2 Max Calculator — FAQ
Common questions about what VO2 max is, how each estimation method works, how accurate the results are, and how to use the calculator safely.
What is VO2 max?
The maximum rate your body can use oxygen during intense exercise, expressed in ml/kg/min. It's a common measure of aerobic (cardiovascular) fitness.
How does the calculator estimate it?
You pick a test method and enter your result; the calculator applies that method's validated formula to estimate your VO2 max, then uses your age and sex to show reference ranges.
Which method should I use?
The resting heart-rate method (Uth formula) needs no exercise but is the least precise. The Cooper 12-minute run, 1.5-mile run, and Rockport 1-mile walk tests require a measured effort and are generally more accurate.
Is it free to use?
Completely free, no sign-up, no downloads, no limits.
How accurate are the estimates?
They are approximations. Field tests carry a typical error of about ±5–10 ml/kg/min compared with a laboratory graded-exercise test, which is the gold standard. Use these estimates as a useful guide, not a precise measurement.
Can I compare results from different methods?
Not directly. Each method has its own formula and error characteristics, so differences between methods may reflect the method itself rather than a real change in fitness. Stick to the same method when tracking progress over time.
Is it safe to do these tests?
The running and walking field tests are strenuous. Warm up properly first, and do not attempt an all-out test if you have a heart or respiratory condition, feel unwell, or have been advised against vigorous exercise without medical clearance. Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or severe breathlessness.
What is a good VO2 max for my age?
It varies by age and sex. The calculator shows reference ranges for your age group and sex so you can see roughly where your estimate falls — from Very Poor through to Superior.
Is my data stored?
No. All calculations happen in your browser and are never stored or sent to a server.
Does this replace a medical or lab assessment?
No. It provides an educational fitness estimate, not medical advice or a clinical measurement. Consult a health professional for personalised guidance or before starting an intense training programme.
This calculator provides educational fitness estimates only — not medical advice, a clinical assessment, or a substitute for a laboratory graded-exercise test. Field-test VO2 max estimates carry a typical error of ±5–10 ml/kg/min and results differ between methods, so compare the same method over time rather than across methods. The Cooper run, 1.5-mile run, and Rockport walk test require strenuous or maximal effort. Warm up properly before any field test. Do not attempt an all-out test if you have a heart or respiratory condition, feel unwell, or have been advised against vigorous exercise without medical clearance. Stop immediately if you experience chest pain, significant shortness of breath, dizziness, or other symptoms. Consult a qualified health professional before starting an intense training programme or if you have any health concerns.
