Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free online color picker and HEX / RGB / HSL converter.

How does the color picker work?

Pick a color from the spectrum by clicking or dragging, or type a value directly into the HEX, RGB, or HSL field. Every format updates live as you interact, and you can copy any value with one click.

Is this color picker free to use?

Completely free — no sign-up, no downloads, and no limits. Use it as often as you like.

What color formats does it convert between?

It converts between HEX (6-digit and 8-digit with alpha), RGB / RGBA, and HSL / HSLA. All formats include optional alpha (transparency) support.

What is the difference between HEX, RGB, and HSL?

All three describe the same color using different representations. HEX uses a 6-character code (e.g. #FF0000), RGB uses red, green, and blue channel values (0–255 each), and HSL uses hue (0–360°), saturation (0–100%), and lightness (0–100%). Choose whichever format your tool or code accepts.

Does it support transparency (alpha)?

Yes. Use the Alpha slider or the Alpha % field to set transparency from 0% (fully transparent) to 100% (fully opaque). The HEX field will show an 8-digit code (#RRGGBBAA), and the copied RGB and HSL values will use rgba() or hsla() syntax.

Can I copy the color values?

Yes. Each format has a Copy button that puts the value in your clipboard instantly — ready to paste into CSS, a design tool like Figma, or any other app.

What is the shade and tint palette?

The palette shows nine shades of your current color, ranging from lighter tints to darker shades. Click any swatch to set it as the active color, which is useful for building a consistent color scale for a design system or palette.

What is the complementary color?

The complementary color is the color directly opposite on the color wheel — calculated by adding 180° to the current hue. Complementary pairs create strong visual contrast and are commonly used in design for emphasis and readability.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. All color calculations happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored anywhere.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The picker is fully responsive and supports touch on the spectrum canvas and all sliders. The layout adapts to fit any screen size without horizontal scrolling.
