What is a color palette generator?
A color palette generator is a tool that creates a set of harmonious colors from a base color using color theory rules. It takes one color you choose and produces a complete palette — useful for UI design, branding, illustration, or any creative project.
What color harmonies does this tool support?
The tool supports six harmonies: Complementary (opposite on the color wheel), Analogous (three neighboring hues), Triadic (three evenly spaced at 120°), Split-Complementary (base plus two colors flanking its complement), Tetradic/Square (four colors at 90° intervals), and Monochromatic (shades and tints of a single hue).
What do HEX, RGB, and HSL mean?
HEX is a six-digit hexadecimal code like #6366f1, widely used in CSS and design tools. RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue — values from 0–255 per channel. HSL stands for Hue, Saturation, Lightness — a more intuitive model where hue is 0–360° and saturation/lightness are percentages.
How do I copy a color code?
Click the swatch color block to copy its value in the currently selected format (HEX, RGB, or HSL). You can also click the individual HEX, RGB, or HSL buttons within each swatch card to copy that specific format regardless of the format selector.
How do I copy the entire palette at once?
Click the "Copy all" button in the top-right of the controls area. This copies all palette colors as a comma-separated list in the currently selected format (HEX, RGB, or HSL).
Can I enter a specific HEX code instead of using the color picker?
Yes. Type any valid 6-digit HEX code (with or without the # prefix) into the text field next to the color picker. The palette updates in real time as you type a valid color.
Which harmony should I use for a website or app?
Analogous harmonies work well for clean, professional interfaces because neighboring hues feel calm and cohesive. Complementary palettes add visual tension and work great for call-to-action buttons against a background. Monochromatic palettes are ideal for minimalist designs where you want depth without color variety.
Does this tool store or upload my colors anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No data is sent to any server. Your color choices are never stored or transmitted.
What is the difference between a shade and a tint?
A tint is created by adding white to a color (increasing lightness in HSL), making it lighter and more pastel. A shade is created by adding black (decreasing lightness), making it darker and more saturated-looking. Both are used to add depth to a monochromatic palette.
Can I use these palettes commercially?
Yes. Colors themselves are not copyrightable. Any palette you generate with this tool is entirely free to use in personal or commercial projects, with no attribution required.
