What it is

The Steps to Calories Calculator turns a step count into meaningful numbers: distance in kilometres and miles, estimated walking time, and an estimated calorie burn. Enter your height and the tool estimates your personal stride; enter your weight and pace for a calorie estimate; set an optional step goal to track your progress.

It also works in reverse — enter a distance and get back the approximate step count for your stride length. All calculations happen instantly in your browser with no data stored or sent anywhere.

Steps ↔ distance (km & miles)

Convert steps to distance in km and miles simultaneously, or reverse: enter a distance to find the equivalent steps. Both directions use the same stride estimate.

Height-based stride estimation

Stride length is estimated as height × 0.415 (male), 0.413 (female), or 0.414 (unspecified). Or enter your own measured stride to override the estimate entirely.

Walking time estimate

Time is calculated from distance ÷ pace. Three presets — slow (~2 mph), average (~3 mph), fast (~4.5 mph) — cover the typical range of walking speeds.

MET-based calorie estimate

Uses the standard formula (weight kg × MET × 3.5 × time min) ÷ 200. MET values: slow 2.8, average 3.5, fast 5.0. If weight is left blank, a default of 70 kg is used and flagged in the results.

Metric & imperial toggle

Switch between metric (cm, kg, km) and imperial (ft+in, lb, miles) at any time. Values are converted automatically and results always show both km and miles.

Optional step goal progress

Enter any step goal to see a progress bar, percentage, and remaining steps. Works with any target — not just 10,000 steps. Turns blue when the goal is met or exceeded.

How stride estimation works

Stride length correlates strongly with height. Research-derived ratios give a reasonable estimate for most people without requiring a measurement. The ratios used are:

Male

Stride = height (m) × 0.415

Female

Stride = height (m) × 0.413

Unspecified

Stride = height (m) × 0.414

For example, a 170 cm person has an estimated stride of about 70.4 cm. 10,000 steps would then cover roughly 7.0 km (4.4 miles). These are population averages — individual stride varies with gait, footwear, and walking surface.

For better accuracy, measure your actual stride: walk 10 steps on flat ground, measure the total distance in cm (or inches), and divide by 10. Enter this in the custom stride field.

How the calorie formula works

The MET formula

Calories = (weight kg × MET × 3.5 × time min) ÷ 200. This is the standard exercise science equation for estimating energy expenditure from physical activity.

Pace presets and MET values

Slow walking (~2 mph): MET 2.8. Average walking (~3 mph): MET 3.5. Fast walking (~4.5 mph): MET 5.0. These values come from established physical activity compendium research.

Why weight matters

Calorie burn scales with body mass — moving a heavier body uses more energy. The default of 70 kg is used if you leave weight blank, but entering your own weight gives a closer estimate.

Step goal progress

Progress is calculated as steps ÷ goal × 100%. Any goal value works. Once the goal is reached, the bar turns blue and the remaining count shows steps over target instead.

Limitations

Both distance and calorie figures are estimates. Stride length varies with terrain, footwear, fatigue, and individual gait. Calorie burn varies with fitness, body composition, walking surface, and metabolic rate. The MET values used are population averages.

This tool gives a general reference estimate, not a measurement. Step targets such as 10,000 steps per day are widely used reference points, not medical requirements — any increase in daily movement has benefit.
