Steps to Calories Calculator — FAQ

Common questions about converting steps to distance, time, and calories — stride estimation, accuracy, units, and step goals.

How does the calculator convert steps to distance?

It estimates your stride length from your height — roughly 0.414 × height in metres (0.415 for male, 0.413 for female). Distance is then steps × stride, shown in both kilometres and miles. You can enter your own measured stride to override the estimate for a more accurate result.

How are calories estimated?

The tool calculates your walking time from the distance and pace you selected, then applies the standard MET formula: (weight kg × MET × 3.5 × time in minutes) ÷ 200. MET values used are 2.8 for slow (~2 mph), 3.5 for average (~3 mph), and 5.0 for fast (~4.5 mph). If you leave weight blank, the tool uses a default of 70 kg and flags this in the results.

Is this calculator free?

Completely free — no sign-up, no downloads, no limits. Use it as often as you like on any device.

How many km is 10,000 steps?

Roughly 7–8 km (about 4.5–5 miles) for an average adult, though it depends entirely on your height and stride. At 170 cm height with the default stride estimate, 10,000 steps comes out to around 7.0 km. Enter your own height in the calculator for a personalised figure.

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

Often around 300–500 kcal depending mainly on your body weight and walking pace. A 70 kg person walking at average pace burns roughly 375 kcal for 10,000 steps. The tool gives you a personalised estimate once you enter your weight.

Can I enter my own stride length?

Yes. Measure your stride by walking 10 steps on flat ground, measuring the total distance, and dividing by 10. Enter that value in the custom stride field and the calculator will use it instead of the height-based estimate. This gives a more accurate distance and calorie result for most people.

Can I switch between metric and imperial?

Yes. Use the Metric / Imperial toggle at the top. Height switches between cm and ft+in; weight between kg and lb; distance between km and miles; stride between cm and inches. Conversion is handled automatically. The results always show both km and miles regardless of which unit you choose.

How accurate are the calorie estimates?

They're estimates. Real calorie burn varies with terrain, fitness level, body composition, walking technique, and individual metabolism, so treat the figures as a useful guide rather than a precise measurement. The stride estimate from height is also an average — your personal stride may differ. Entering a custom measured stride and your actual weight will always give a closer result.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated directly in your browser. Your steps, height, weight, and other inputs are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.

Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?

It's a popular general target, not a medical requirement. Research shows that health benefits start well below 10,000 steps, and any increase in daily movement has value. The step goal feature in this tool simply tracks progress toward whatever target you set — the choice of target is entirely your own. This tool provides general information only and is not medical advice; talk to a health professional about what's right for you.

Distance and calorie figures are general estimates. Stride length is estimated from height and varies between individuals — for a more accurate result, measure your own stride and enter it manually. Calorie estimates depend on terrain, fitness level, body composition, and walking technique, and may vary substantially. Step counts like 10,000 steps per day are widely used reference targets, not medical requirements — any increase in daily movement has benefit.
